Joel-Peter Witkin

The gallery will have the pleasure of presenting to the public works of the famous American photographer Joel-Peter Witkin. Known for his singular, baroque and disparate photography, Witkin will be honored in this exhibition conceived in collaboration with the Etherton Gallery. Apostle of the strange and the bizarre, the artist transports our eye into a world of multiple references, where beauty meets the morbid. After forty years of an artistic journey with undeniable timelessness, it seems interesting to highlight the abundant iconography of Joel-Peter Witkin. His atypical work echoes ancient mythology, as well as popular culture, history, philosophy or classical painting. Recognized as a reference in contemporary photography, many personal and collective exhibitions around the world have been dedicated to him, including “Hell or Heaven” at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris in 2012 or at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1995.
