Blur, Sharpen and Smudge
Japanese artist Kenta Cobayashi (Tokyo, 1992) works with photography, installation and video to create an inedited digital aesthetics. His practice has been influenced by the urban and high-tech context on one hand and by the Japanese tradition on the other. For Paris Photo New York 2020 the artist presents a site-specific solo show "Blur, Sharpen and Smudge". As Cobayashi’s first time exhibiting in the USA, the project involves different aspects and outcomes of his practice. Dealing with the fluidity of the photographic medium, the works are the result of editing not only visual information but memory and imagery that are perceivable yet invisible to the naked eye. Cobayashi’s photography overtakes its own and innate two-dimensional structure and its documentary purpose to stand as a link between time and space, reality and artificiality.
